The Saracen Tower of the Castle of Santa Severa

Free visit to the monumental Tower of the Castle of Santa Severa from 11 am to 1 pm for groups up to a maximum of 8 people, by booking. Organized by CoopCulture.

Visit to the tall cylindrical tower built in the early Middle Ages, perhaps as early as in the 9th century, with the function of sighting and controlling the underlying port canal. The tower, called Saracen in modern times, appears today in its definitive form, assumed in the 16th century following restoration and embellishment interventions by the preceptor Bernardino Cirillo, when access was assured by the only wooden bridge that connected it to the Fortress and a small door corresponding to the current one, which could only be reached from below with a wooden staircase. Inside there are three overlapping circular rooms connected by a modern spiral staircase. From the top you can enjoy a wonderful panorama that sweeps along the coast from Fiumicino to Santa Marinella and inland on the whole castle up to the Monti della Tolfa and Cerveteri. Much information on its history and its armament are preserved in the “Museum of the Castle of Santa Severa” inside the Fortress. Appointment at the ticket office of the Castle of Santa Severa.
